Meeting Topics

At each of our meetings, we begin by checking in with each of our members as well as new parents and friends who are attending for the first time. Often, our entire meeting time is devoted to discussion and "support group" activities designed to encourage old and new members to discuss issues and events which are significant in their lives, and share their experiences with the others. At other meetings, we feature discussions of specific issues of interest to our members, led by outside speakers. Here are some examples of recent topics we have discussed using outside speakers:

  • Long Term Relationships," a discussion with several gay and lesbian couples who talked about their relationships and share their commitment ceremonies;

  • The Challenges of Being Gay and Adolescent: What Parents and Educators Need to Know," an open discussion featuring parents and a number of prominent educators in the area; the discussion focused on ways we can make our schools safer places for lesbian and gay young people;

  • An Evening With Our Children," featuring attendance and discussions with gay and lesbian children of our members who were home for the holiday period.

Upcoming meetings will include discussion of gay and lesbian parents, and what their kids have to say; gay and lesbian couples who have long-term relationships; discussion about bisexuality; and continuing planning and strategies for the PFLAG Speakers Bureau, to extend our outreach into the local communities and schools. To receive the latest email bulletins about topics at our upcoming meetings, send your name, phone number and email address to our membership coordinator, Jane Frantz, at jane.frantz@comcast.net.
